Weekly Radar (November 2, 2022)

Erling Haaland is a scoring machine, but will he be able to score an all-time EPL record?

The Premier League season is just in its early stages, but Haaland is already on his way to making goal-scoring history. With 17 goals scored in the first 11 games, nine away from netting three consecutive home match hat tricks earlier this season.

The 22-year-old striker, who joined Manchester City from German side Borussia Dortmund, is just six goals shy of matching last season’s EPL top scorers mark — Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min, who hit 23 apiece. More importantly, he is 15 goals away from the record tally of 32 goals for a 38-match EPL season, which Salah set in 2017–18, and exactly halfway from equaling Alan Shearer’s and Andrew Cole’s joint record of 34 goals in a 42-match EPL season.

Such impressive numbers lead most football pundits to believe that Haaland isn’t just on course to break EPL scoring records: he’s about to destroy them. The Polkamarkets Community not only corroborates this sentiment but also foresees it happening during this current season, with the Yes position priced at 0.599 MOVR. And while everything points to it as inevitable, the reality isn’t always linear: individual and team performance can fluctuate during the season, not to mention injuries that might seriously delay and compromise the whole trend. So let’s see if this record will be shattered this year, while enjoying Haaland’s unbelievable talent and love for the sport.

Will Musk’s loose stance on free-speech bring Trump back to Tweeting?

Elon Musk’s completion of the long-awaited $44 billion deal to take over Twitter opened the door to the possible return by former President Donald Trump to the platform, just a couple of years after being permanently banned for his tweets around the January 6 Capitol riot.

Prior to the purchase, Musk pledged to lift Trump’s ban, calling the permanent suspension “flat-out stupid” and a “morally bad decision.”

But although Musk has hinted at being more permissive towards the content allowed on the site, he also said he does not want the platform to become a “free-for-all hellscape”, where anything goes “with no consequences.” Instead, he aims to create a “common digital town square” for an open dialogue between people with divergent views but also admitted that there must be limits. In fact, Musk’s new commitment to gather a moderation council with “widely diverse viewpoints” should pause any concerns about Trump’s imminent comeback, as “no major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.”.

On the other hand, Trump has previously said he would remain on his platform — Truth Social — instead of rejoining Twitter. But a change in his approach could hold significant political implications as November’s midterm elections near and Trump shifts his focus to 2024 and his political future.

With all this in mind, it is still unclear whether Donald Trump will be unbanned from Twitter by the end of 2022, with the Polkamarkets Community splitting their position relatively evenly between both outcomes (with the NO position priced at 0.545 MOVR).

We will have to wait for the dust to settle or, to put it in Musk’s terms, to let his new role “sink in” Twitter’s upcoming future.

Alzheimer’s treatment and prevention are on their path to becoming a reality. But when will that reality reach our lives?

In November 2021, Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston launched the first human trial of a nasal vaccine for Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly 20 years of research went into developing the vaccine, which uses the immune system to clear Alzheimer’s disease-related proteins from the brain.

Nearly three years later, a paper published in the journal Aging made a remarkable claim of reversing cognitive decline through an innovative treatment for Alzheimer’s, allowing some people with early stages of the disease to return to work. However, the same study also stressed that a more extensive investigation into the Treatment called “Metabolic Enhancement for Neurodegeneration,” or MEND, was needed.

Aside from sustained progress in treatment, the search for an effective Alzheimer’s vaccine is also in development with different trial approaches, such as beta-amyloid or Immune-modulating vaccines, with a handful of those already in phase 2 and 3 trials.

But although research into Alzheimer’s treatments and vaccines is exciting, it’s important to keep emotions in check. The clinical trial process exists to keep people safe from harmful side effects, and it can take many years for a treatment to get through the approval pipeline.

Nonetheless, such scientific advancement begs the question of when to expect any fully approved treatment or vaccine for Alzheimer’s disease. All research points to an approved vaccine in the next 5 to 10 years, but only if proven safe and effective.

Prediction markets with meaningful insights could definitely bring light to the matter, so we could all have a good forecast for the timeline of Alzheimer’s eradication.
